As is the case in Japan, August is typically the hottest month of the year in Portland. To cool off, Portlanders often go the Oregon Coast to cool down with the cold ocean breezes. Other Portland residents head off to the Columbia River Gorge area to swim in the Sandy or Washougal Rivers.
For those of us who can’t easily make it outside the Portland city limits, there is an alternative to cool down; a visit to one of Portland’s many delicious ice cream parlors. During hot evenings, lines of overheated customers line up to try ice creams made with local milk from local dairy farms and ingredients from local farms. There is even tasty plant-based ice cream (made with coconut milk!) for Portland’s growing vegan population.
Here are the Hoksuei North America team’s recommended ice cream restaurants — feel to try them out (and don’t forget to invite us)!
