Japan is enjoying an unusually long Golden Week holiday this year from April 27th through tomorrow May 6th. In a typical year, four national holidays are observed in late April and early May giving workers multiple days off. This year, the Japanese imperial transition took place on April 30 and May 1st making Golden Week an unprecedented 10 day national holiday.
The 30th marked the end of the Heisei imperial era and the ascension of the new emperor on the 1st was the inception of the Reiwa imperial era. Shown here is the kanji for Reiwa which will be listed on documents nationwide when people head back to work this week.
